With warm summer breezes and incredible views of the surrounding Purcell mountains it is no surprise that once people have played Kimberly Golf Club they plan their next golfing vacation around this hidden gem. Home to golf in the Kootenays since 1924, this magnificent course is slowly becoming known to the rest of the golfing world.
The rolling terrain and tight fairways mean that accuracy is a must. Players with a tendency to spray the balls will find strokes being added to their game on this course. Careful club selection and shot preparation is therefore a must. The best strategy is play within yourself on the par fours and try to make headway on the par threes and fives.
The best example of this necessity is in the 459 yard par four 16th hole. A solid tee shot down the right side of the fairway will give you the highest percentage chance at reaching the green in regulation. This unfortunately means that you will be hitting over two bunkers and flirting with a third. Big hitters can try and cut the corner of this dogleg left, but accuracy must come with that strategy.
Just a hair to the left and you will be looking at a 200 yard punch down shot with a controlled fade to have any hope of finding the green. If that shot is in your bag, by all means go for it. If you are mortal like the rest of us, consider playing the right side of the fairway and letting your putter work its magic.
