You are there for golf though and the Von Hagge Design Group, whose courses world wide host an average on average of sixteen major PGA and International events every year, have put together a masterpiece that perfectly compliments every other first-class aspect of El Tigre.
A classic risk and reward course, the El Tigre brand of golf is no more clearly evident than at the par four, fifth hole. Stretching 474 yards from the tips, golfers are presented with a split fairway and must therefore wrestle with two options before teeing off: Take the safe route to the right and be left with a long iron to the green or take the risky but far more rewarding route to the left. If you take the left fairway you will be able to attack the well defended and undulating green with a wedge or nine-iron – far more preferable than a long iron. The only problem with the left route though is getting there to start with. From the back tees you will have to carry 200 yards of water and another 50 yards of rough and sand to reach the fairway. Once you’ve done that you need to hope for a friendly draw or roll to the left to avoid the pot bunkers that await you in the right centre of the fairway. That sounds easy enough right? Before you say “Safe Route!” don’t forget that the ball really flies off the club in Puerto Vallarta and we mortals are more likely to play the blue or white tees where carrying the trouble requires a more realistic 230 yard drive! Now are you more tempted to pull out that driver and let the big dog eat?
