Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club is a great test of golf just 35 minutes from downtown Vancouver, British Columbia and only 15 minutes from Vancouver International Airport.
Designed by renowned architect Les Furber, Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club uses fast greens, winding fairways and innumerable water hazards to keep golfers honest. To shoot a god score at Mayfair, you need to be patient, and wait for the inevitable opportunities to arise. Golfers who try to force shots or bend the course to their will are likely to deposit a ball or two into Mayfair’s water hazards that come in to play on 13 of 18 holes.
The par-four 7th hole is a perfect example of the Mayfair Lakes brand of golf. Ranging from 337 to 404 yards, this sharp dogleg right presents you with both choices and temptations. Choose to play it safe and you can simply hit a long iron or fairway wood to the turn in the fairway and have a mid-iron for your approach to the green. Choose to have a short iron in to the green and you will have to decide which club to go with off the tee and how much of the fairway you want to cut off. The temptation to cut the corner and attack the hole is obvious, so too is the penalty. The right side of the hole is a massive water hazard. Any short cuts must therefore carry over water the entire way to your chosen landing area. Try to bite off too much of the water hazard and you will be hitting your third from the water’s edge. Cut the corner successfully and you will be looking at a chip to set-up birdie. It is precisely this brand of risk-reward golf that has made Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club so popular with the locals and a great supplement to any Vancouver Golf Vacation.
