Victoria Golf Club, the oldest course in North American west of the Mississippi, has been christened “Pebble Beach North” by those who have played her. With several holes directly bordering the waters of the Pacific and views of the Olympic Mountains from virtually every hole you will quickly understand why so many people have granted Victoria Golf Club such high praise.
Built long before cart paths, halfway huts and GPS Victoria Golf Club is a traditionalist’s dream. It does not attempt to dazzle golfers with intricate mounding, ornately designed bunkers or hidden hazards. It is simply a timeless course on an absolutely unforgettable piece of land.
Victoria Golf Club’s par-four seventh hole is a perfect example of what this course has to offer. At only 369 yards from the tips, this downhill par four would seem to be open to the onslaught of today’s high-tech clubs. The hole’s principle defense never lay in its length though. It rests instead in its precision requirements. This gentle dog-leg left is bordered down the entire left side by the Pacific waters and dominated by gusting on-shore winds. To take a run at par or better you must play your drive up the right side of the fairway to open up the angle to this three-tiered green. From there you need to choose the right club to attack the green and decide how much leeway to give the surging winds. Get too aggressive and the wind may deposit your shot in the Pacific. Play too conservatively and you may find yourself chipping from well off the green. If things go poorly don’t worry. Take a look around you at the incredible views of Mt Baker and the Olympic Mountain Range and score will quickly seem quite irrelevant.
Consistently rated in the top-fifty courses in Canada, Victoria Golf Club is a course that truly belongs on your must-play list. Be sure to ask us about adding it to your Victoria Golf Vacation. |
